Module 6 · Lesson 3 of 4

Calling the Company (Yes, You Can)

The exact kind of calm, prepared script that gets results when you call a creditor, utility, or service provider — plus what to ask for.

An honest reminder

Lived experience, not licensed financial or legal advice — for anything with real weight, talk to a qualified professional.

That call you've been avoiding — the creditor, the utility company, the service provider — I know exactly why you haven't made it. Because in your head, it's a confrontation with someone who has all the power and a script designed to say no. Let me tell you what's actually on the other end: a person in a headset whose job includes payment plans, hardship options, and fee reviews. They do this all day.

The trick is calling prepared instead of calling scared. Write yourself a three-sentence script before you dial: who you are (“Hi, I'm calling about account number...”), what you need (“I'm having trouble with this bill”), and what you're asking for (“Can we talk about a payment plan?”). Three sentences. That's your armor.

And here's the part that surprises everyone: the call itself can wait till tomorrow. Today is just the script. Because half the dread is not knowing what to say — and once the words are on paper, the call shrinks from a monster to a phone call. You've handled phone calls before, love. This is just one more.

Your Now-Step

Write a 3-sentence script for one call you've been avoiding: who you are, what you need, what you're asking for. The call itself can wait till tomorrow.

A moment to reflect

What's one money conversation you've been avoiding — and what's the smallest first move toward it?

Private — these notes never leave your device.

“Move forward.”
